The story behind the creation of the ENSIS recycling facility

THE STORY BEHIND THE CREATION OF THE ENSIS RECYCLING FACILITY

Can the problem of plastic waste become a driver of community development? The ENSIS team from the Chernihiv region, led by Dmytrii Melnyk, shows how an environmental initiative can transform not only the environment but also the social and economic situation. Through their participation in the Impactpreneurship 2.0 program, they are working to create a recycling facility that will become a tool for cleaning up the community, creating jobs for young people, and supporting local educational institutions.

A year before the Impactpreneurship 2.0 course began, Dmytrii attended strategic fundraising training on the FUNdraiser platform. That first encounter with the platform became the first step toward joining the new program. Building the team was a natural process: ENSIS was joined by members of two civil society organizations that had been created during last year's project.

ENSIS's mission is to make the environment cleaner while at the same time creating economic opportunities for the community's young people. The main problem ENSIS seeks to solve is the passivity of the local population. As the team captain puts it: "No one wants to do anything, but everyone wants things to be good." This is precisely what prompted the team to create a social enterprise capable not only of tackling environmental challenges but also of changing people's mindsets.

During their training on Impactpreneurship 2.0, the ENSIS team achieved important wins. The greatest of these was securing grant funds for the project, as well as creating a working business model that turned the idea into a real action plan. Dmytrii stresses that there are currently two biggest challenges. The first is the proximity to the border with Russia, so ENSIS operates under constant danger, and the second is logistical difficulties, in particular that the main production equipment has to be purchased abroad.

The ENSIS project is aimed at young people aged 14 to 35. Creating jobs and building a volunteer movement will help young people fulfill themselves and increase the community's cohesion. The team plans to direct a significant part of its profits to supporting initiatives developed by young entrepreneurs.

Beyond its environmental mission, the team aims to solve social problems. One of its priorities has been creating an accessible environment for people with limited mobility and children with special needs; ENSIS is already looking for funds to purchase a lift.

The team draws inspiration from the difficulties that arise while bringing ideas to life. Dmytrii emphasizes: "The main thing is not to give up." It was this persistence that helped ENSIS overcome numerous challenges and keep working on developing the community even in difficult conditions.

The Impactpreneurship 2.0 program gave the team valuable experience and knowledge, which they plan to integrate into future projects. Thanks to the support of mentor Kseniia Karbovska, ENSIS set their priorities, which allowed them to focus on effectively carrying out their mission.

ENSIS proves that social entrepreneurship can become an engine of change even in the most difficult circumstances. Their experience inspires others not to fear difficulties and to move toward their goal. "Understand why you are doing this, and bring in people who are ready to work alongside you," the captain advises future program participants.

The team sees great potential in social entrepreneurship for Ukraine, despite the difficult economic conditions. Dmytrii notes: "All that's left for us is to work and change the reality around us." The team is confident that their project will become an example for other communities and help build a future in which ecology, the economy, and social responsibility are inseparably linked.
