The role of social entrepreneurship in community development: the SOLAR HOPE example

The Solar Hope team from the Dnipropetrovsk region is an excellent example of how a cohesive and ambitious team can transform urban spaces, making them safer and more environmentally resilient. Taking part in the Impactpreneurship 2.0 program became a decisive step toward realizing a project that not only responds to the challenges of our time but also carries significant social impact. This article is dedicated to the success story of a team confidently paving the way toward sustainable community development.

Team captain Andrii Bielkin learned about the Impactpreneurship 2.0 course online and saw an opportunity to gain fundamental knowledge in social entrepreneurship. The Solar Hope team was formed with a clear division of roles: Andrii took on the position of project manager, focusing on strategic planning; Tetiana Bulana became the communications manager; and another member took responsibility for accounting.

Solar Hope's core mission is to create a safe, innovative, and sustainable environment for urban spaces. Their project focuses on solving one of the community's pressing problems, the unreliable lighting at pedestrian crossings caused by the energy shortage resulting from the destruction of Ukraine's power system. The team is developing projected pedestrian crossings and energy-independent solutions for traffic lights using solar panels. They also analyze data to improve the efficiency of the infrastructure.

Beyond the technical dimension, the project has a social component: engaging young people in the initiative. Solar Hope gives students and local youth the chance to gain hands-on experience in developing social and technological projects, building their leadership and organizational skills. Solar Hope is unique in its versatility. The team not only creates innovative solutions but also nurtures a new generation of active citizens. Their motto, "We carry the light," reflects the team's aspiration not merely to improve infrastructure but to illuminate the path to change through social responsibility and environmental awareness.

The course gave Solar Hope a great deal. The team won a grant to implement the project, gained valuable knowledge, and built a strong network of contacts. Mentor Kseniia Karbovska helped the team systematize its workflow and develop a strategic approach to social entrepreneurship. For Andrii Bielkin, the course became a platform for networking and for a deeper understanding of how a social component affects business. He advises other course participants not to be afraid to get involved, even if they do not plan to write grants, because Impactpreneurship 2.0 offers the chance to build a team, grasp the principles of project management, and discover new prospects.

The Solar Hope project is already making a real contribution to community life. A safe crossing will appear next to the local university, setting an example for others. City residents will gain improved infrastructure that will reduce the number of road accidents and increase comfort.

The team sees its project as scalable, and so they plan to involve other communities across Ukraine in the initiative. Their success in the Impactpreneurship 2.0 course was the first step toward creating lasting impact.

"Social entrepreneurship opens up new horizons, helping not only to address economic issues but also to shape long-term change in communities," Andrii notes. He believes this field will become an important part of Ukraine's economic growth and the sustainable development of society, as well as a platform for attracting international support and investment.
